九十年代中期的节奏布鲁斯爱好者既不像前辈一样高雅，也很少像其他类型音乐爱好者那样追求纯粹的感官刺激。

Maxwell的音乐中蕴藏的现代感觉和坦率的浪漫情怀显然符合这些挑剔的节奏布鲁斯爱好者的胃口。

Maxwell17岁时开始在一把破旧的卡西欧键盘上创作音乐，他过人的天赋让他很快成为了纽约俱乐部圈子里的名人。在和Columbia公司签约后，他和吉他手Wah Wah Watson、萨克斯手Stuart Matthewman、歌曲作者Leon Ware一起录制了首张专辑。

Maxwell的首张专辑《Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite》，包容了Prince迷幻的性感疯克和Marvin Gaye标准的浪漫概念，再加上节奏布鲁斯本身浓郁纯美的根源色彩，成为了当时节奏布鲁斯的一个难得的精品。单曲“Ascension (Never Wonder)”，进入了TOP40排行榜，专辑在1996年底成为金唱片。两年后，Columbia公司推出Maxwell的第二张专辑《Embrya》。在2002年，Maxwell发行了他的第三张专辑《NOW》
